1724 Chester Courthouse

Originally listed in the National Register of Historic Places in the 1970s, the 1724 Chester Courthouse is one of the oldest public buildings in continuous use in the United States. Zeller Preservation was engaged to update the original nomination to meet current National Register documentation standards. The work included expanding the historic context, refining the statement of significance, and incorporating updated research and scholarship.

The revised nomination aligns with current National Park Service guidance and offers a clearer, more comprehensive understanding of the building’s architectural and historical significance. Completed in conjunction with a broader restoration effort, the project supports ongoing preservation of the courthouse in advance of the United States Semiquincentennial (America 250) in 2026.
